ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಧೈರ್ಯಶಾಲಿ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ. ಭಾರತದಾದ್ಯಂತ ಮರಾಠ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ, ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸಿದ ಕೀರ್ತಿ ಇವರದ್ದು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಜೀವಿತಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮೊಘಲರಿಂದ ಕಾಪಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅನೇಕ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಹೋರಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯನ್ನು ದೇವರೆಂದೇ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದಕ್ಕಿಣ ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಕೂಡ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಹಿಂದೂ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಅಳಿಯದೇ ಉಳಿದಿದೆಯೆಂದರೆ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿಯ ನ್ಯಾಯಯುತ ಆಡಳಿತವಾಗಿದೆ.

ಹಿಂದೂ ಹೃದಯ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಟ ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಹೆಸರು ಶಿವಾಜಿರಾಜೆ ಶಹಾಜಿರಾಜೆ ಬೋಂಸ್ಲೆ. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಫೆಬ್ರುವರಿ 19, 1630 ರಂದು ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ಪುಣೆ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಶಿವನೇರಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರ ಪಟ್ಟಾಭಿಷೇಕವು ಜೂನ್‌ 6, 1674 ರಂದು ನಡೆಯಿತು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ತಮ್ಮ ಆಡಳಿತಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ಕೊಂಕಣ, ಸಹ್ಯಾದ್ರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟಗಳಿಂದ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ತಂಜಾವರ್‌ವರೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತಿರಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಜೂನ್‌ 6, 1674 ರಿಂದ ಎಪ್ರಿಲ್‌ 3, 1680 ರವರೆಗೆ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು.

ರಾಯಗಢ ಕೋಟೆಯು ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಾಹಾರಾಜರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡೀ ಮಹಾರಾಷ್ಟ್ರದ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಗಂಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿದ್ದರು. ಒಂದು ಮಗನ ಹೆಸರು ಸಂಭಾಜಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಇನ್ನೋರ್ವ ಮಗನ ಹೆಸರು ರಾಜರಾಮ್‌. ಶಿವಾಜಿಯವರ ತಂದೆಯ ಹೆಸರು ಶಹಾಜಿರಾಜೆ ಭೋಸ್ಲೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ತಾಯಿಯ ಹೆಸರು ಜಿಜಾಬಾಯಿ. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಎಪ್ರಿಲ್‌3, 1680 ರಂದು ರಾಯಗಢ ಕೋಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಧನರಾದರು.

ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಓರ್ವ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಸಹಿಷ್ಣುಹಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಆಡಳಿತದ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೂಗಳು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂರು ಕೂಡ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಧಾರ್ಮಿಕ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಹಿಂದುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಸಹಕಾರವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಸಹಕಾರವನ್ನು ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂರಿಗೆ ಮಸೀದಿಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೂ ಪಂಡಿತರಿಗಿದ್ದ ಗೌರವವನ್ನೇ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಸಂತರಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಫಕೀರ್‌ರಿಗೂ ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಶಿವಾಜಿಯ ಸೈನ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಮದೂ ಸೈನಿಕರಂತೆ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಸೈನಿಕರು ಇದ್ದರು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು, ಗೌರವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಆಡಳಿತಾವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಂಪ್ರದಾಯಿಕ ಹಿಂದೂ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

ಭಾರತವು ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಕಾಲದಿಂದಲೂ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಧೈರ್ಯಶಾಲಿ ಪುರುಷರ ಮತ್ತು ವೀರ ಆಡಳಿತಗಾರರ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಧೈರ್ಯಶಾಲಿ ಪುರುಷರು ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಮಹಿಳೆಯರು ಕೂಡ ಆಡಳಿತ ನಡೆಸಿದ ಇತಿಹಾಸವಿದೆ. ಈ ಧೈರ್ಯಶಾಲಿ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಅಧಿಪತಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ತಾಯಿನಾಡು ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನೇ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಂತಹ ಮಹಾನ್‌ ಧೈರ್ಯಶಾಲಿ ಯೋಧರಲ್ಲಿ ಛತ್ರಪತಿ ಶಿವಾಜಿ ಮಹಾರಾಜರು ಕೂಡ ಒಬ್ಬರು.
